ABOUT US
We’re a certificated airplane maintenance and experimental aircraft builder-assist and maintenance company located on Troutdale Airport, a few miles from the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. On a clear day, you can see Mount Hood from our shop.
OUR OWNER
Ted Backus has loved planes for as long as he can remember. His dad bought a Cessna 180 on floats when Ted was in 4th grade, and summer flights to Canada sealed his fate as a lover of all things aviation. Ted got his pilot’s license at 17 then later got his commercial license and A&P/IA. He purchased Emerald Aircrafters in 1993 and (mostly) loves every day he spends in the hangar. Ted is happiest with his head and hands in a plane and his trusty poodle Pepper by his side.

SPECIALTIES

CERTIFICATED AIRCRAFT
We service and maintain most general aviation single and twin-engine aircraft. With two IAs on-site, we conduct annual, 100-hour, pre-purchase, and return-to-service inspections. Additionally, we provide minor to major repairs, including engine installations--custom overhaul and factory remanufactured--and minor to major alterations, including product improvements and installation of approved STCs.
EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT
We have over 30 years of experience providing builder-assist and maintenance services including condition and pre-purchase inspections.

AVIONICS
Ready to upgrade your experimental aircraft with shiny new glass displays? We've got the expertise to guide your selection and manage installation. With prices for retrofit avionics declining and functionalities exploding, the time is right for embracing the latest cockpit technology. Call us to discuss the newest products on the market--and what they can do for you!
ELECTROAIR INSTALLATION
Electroair offers an Electronic Ignition Kit which is fully STC'd. Its high energy, variable-timed, fully electronic ignition gives piston-powered aircraft an increase in power and lowers fuel consumption. Emerald Aircrafters is proud to be an electroair installation center.

CIES INSTALLATION
Ask your wife if you need this.
We guarantee she'll say YES!
With all the mass spinning at the pointy end of an airplane, even small imbalances can cause big vibrations—and vibration is the enemy of just about every system on the aircraft, including the pilot (AOPA). Dynamic propeller balancing prevents wear and tear on the engine, instruments, and airframe—and promotes smoother, more comfortable flying.

PEPPER
This is Ted's faithful companion and co-pilot, Pepper. She's a fixture at the shop.

TESTIMONIALS
I met Ted Backus in 1991 as he was building my Lancair 360. Before completion he purchased this business. Completed and flying since 1993, Ted has been my preferred mechanic since that time. I have tried a few others and seem frequently disappointed. Ted seems to get things right. Emerald Aircrafters still maintains my Lancair as well as my Malibu. He is a gifted problem solver as well as an artist with composite technology.Â
Do I trust Ted and Emerald Aircrafters? With my life.
